About Us
Kendall, Florida is considered an unincorporated community that can be located within Dade county, Miami. More specifically, the city is situated about 10 miles southwest of Miami along U.S. Route 1. By the 2020 census, the community had a population of 80,241.
The community of Kendall has some history, with its name’s history stemming back to the 1950s when the term had been mainly used to describe a region centered around U.S.Route 1. Back then, the place was severely unpopulated, only consisting of trees, fields, and grooves. After a sudden rapid development in the 1950s, that is when the name of the area “Kendall” came to be.
The name “Kendall” originally came from Henry John Broughton Kendall which is a director of Florida Land and Mortgage who moved to the area in the 1900s to manage the company’s land. Back then, in the 20th century, development was slow. A post office was only opened in 1914, and the first school opened in 1929. Although the area was severely damaged by Hurricane Andrew, they recovered after a while.
The name was referring to the various communities built in the vicinity of present-day Pinecrest and the eastern half of the current Kendall CDP. The growth then shifted to the west within the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, which is when the term steadily shifted west concurrently, and today it is most often applied to the area more formally known as West Kendall.
Nowadays, the area is a fully functional community, even becoming a popular place for visitors, going to the Dadeland Mall, which is potentially the biggest draw within Kendall. It is a 1.4 million-square-foot mall that features more than 185 retail stores and restaurants.
The area also features several outdoor recreation activities, these include the Killian Greens Golf Club and Briar Bay Golf Course. For more outdoor recreation options, take the family to one of Kendall’s many parks, such as Kendall Indian Hammocks Park, where you’ll find a disc golf course, a skate park, and trails that wind through a tropical hardwood hammock.
